Nancy Devlin

Nancy is Professor of Health Economics at the University of Melbourne. Her previous positions included Director of Research, Office of Health Economics, London (2009-2019), and Professor of Health Economics at City University of London (2001-2009). From 2024 Nancy has commenced a new role as Editor-in-Chief at Value in Health.

Nancy has published over 190 original peer reviewed journal articles and reports on a wide range of empirical and theoretical topics in health economics. Her principal areas of research expertise are the measurement and valuation of patient reported health outcomes; the cost effectiveness thresholds used in making judgments about value for money in health care; and priority setting in health care. Most recently, she was the principal investigator on QUOKKA, a large research programme to improve measurement and valuation of children’s HRQoL, funded by the Australian government ($2.4m, 2020-24). Her earlier work was highlighted in the UK’s NIHR 10-year anniversary report, which noted ‘The impact of her research is worldwide and highly significant in improving health and health care decision making’. Her research, submitted as a case study to the UK’s 2014 REF exercise, was judged by the sub-panel as ‘demonstrating very considerable impact in terms of reach and significance’.

Nancy’s leadership roles in the field of health economics and outcomes research have included being a past President of ISPOR and, currently, chair of the Board of the EuroQol Research Foundation.
